Rong Bao Zhai is a comprehensive cultural enterprise which markets painting and calligraphy. Rong Bao Zhai, former Song Zhu Zhai, was set up in 1672 (the eleventh year of Kangxi reign in the Qing dynasty). Song Zhu Zhai was a famous South Paper shop in the Qianlong reign. In 1894, Song Zhu Zhai set up a branch named Rong Bao Zhai which means making friends with art and regarding reputation as the most precious. In October 1950, new Rong Bao Zhai, jointly run by the State and private, started business. Guo Moruo, a famous scholar, wrote “New Rong Bao Zhai” in his own calligraphy on the tablet.
For decades, especially since the founding of New China, with the support of different circles, Rong Bao Zhai has been developing continuously and has formed a diversified structure which focuses painting and calligraphy marketing. Rong Bao Zhai ranks first domestically with powerful influence and competitiveness in painting and calligraphy marketing, painting tools trade, woodblock printing, binding and mounting, collecting, publishing, auction, pawn, exhibition, art education, and printing.
Rong Bao Zhai enjoys good reputation among the artists with its honest marketing and good-quality art works. It was known as "home of painters and calligraphers". Rong Bao Zhai pays special attention to art works’ collecting and protecting. Rong Bao Zhai has collected thousands of Yuan, Ming and Qing art works and is honored as “Tiny Palace Museum”. Rong Bao Zhai has inherited and developed woodblock printing and mounting techniques and has made fresh breakthrough in this field
Rong Bao Zhai aims to develop traditional culture. In recent years, Rong Bao Zhai has got good social and economic results under the leadership of the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee and China Publishing Group, with the support of different circles. During the eleventh Five-Year Plan, Rong Bao Zhai expanded the investing in relative industries. Rong Bao Zhai successively set up Zibo Rong Bao Pawn Co. Ltd, and Beijing Rong Bao Zhai Pawn Co. Ltd to work on art works’ pawn business. At present, those companies which are managed by Rong Bao Zhai and brought into Rong Bao Zhai’s financial system, have formed a tentative cultural enterprise group structure, including Beijing Rong Bao Auction co. Ltd, Rong Bao Zhai (Shanghai) Auction co. Ltd, Rong Bao Zhai Tianjin Branch, Rong Bao Zhai Art Academy, Rong Bao Zhai (HongKong) Co. Ltd, Beijing Yin Guan Electronic Publishing Co., Ltd, Beijing Yantai Graphics Printing Co. Ltd, Rong Bao Zhai Property Management Company, eleven companies in all.
Rong Bao Zhai Publishing House was set up in 1993. It deals with traditional painting & calligraphy professional books and publishing journal. It has published many excellent publications such as Rong Bao Zhai Picture Copybook, The Complete Works of China Calligraphy, Epigraph Calligraphy Culling, Rong Bao Zhai Treasure, and Rong Bao Zhai Journal. In January 2012, Arts was launched. For recent years, Rong Bao Zhai Publishing House schemes Rong Bao Zhai Copybook, Li Xiongcai Complete Works, Peking Opera Types, Zhang Daqian Complete Works, Wu Zuoren Complete Works. In 2009, Rong Bao Zhai Journal was admired as “the most influential journal of New China’s 60 years” by China Journal Society. In 2010, The 7th Rong Bao Zhai Treasure—painting 7 gained nominating prize of the third China Outstanding Publication Pride (for books). Li Weiqing’s Flowers and Birds Paintings gained nominating prize of China Publishing Governmental Prize.
Rong Bao Zhai, century-old shop, was identified as well-known trademark of China by National Trademark Judging Panel and was judged as China’s Time-Honored Brand by Ministry of Commercial Affairs. Rong Bao Zhai’s woodblock printing skill was placed on the first batch of national rate immaterial cultural heritage by the State Council. In 2008, mounting skill was placed on the second batch of national rate immaterial cultural heritage. In 2011, Rong Bao Zhai was placed on the first batch of national rate immaterial cultural heritage of productive protection exemplar base. In 2008, Rong Bao Zhai successfully took part in the program of Beijing Olympic Auspicious Cloud House. In 2010, Rong Bao Zhai successfully attended the Expo in Shanghai.
